The Indonesian Navy (TNI Angkatan Laut / TNI AL) has launched the service's second Bung Karno-class corvette, KRI Bung Hatta (370), at PT Karimun Anugrah Sejati (PT KAS) in Batam. The ceremony was led by the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali on Thursday, (Feb. 27).
The vessel follows KRI Bung Karno (369), the first in its class, which is currently in service under the 1st Fleet Command’s Corvette Squadron. Admiral Ali stated that the ship-naming and launching ceremony was significant, noting that the Corvette, as part of the striking force, would enhance the fleet’s striking power, particularly in securing key maritime choke points.
"The construction of this ship at a domestic shipyard not only demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving the nation's defence industry but also proves that our people have the capability and potential to produce combat equipment for the Indonesian Navy," he said.
KRI Bung Hatta (370) was built over 20 months, and measures 80.30 metres in length, 12.60 metres in width, with a displacement of 650 tonnes. It is equipped with a 57 mm naval gun, which is planned to be upgraded to 76 mm, along with two 20 mm cannons. The vessel has an endurance of five days and can accommodate 82 personnel. Its speeds range from 14 knots economically, 18 knots for cruising, and a maximum of 25 knots.
In addition to its main armament, the ship will also be fitted with Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM), Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM), and a torpedo system for surface, air, and underwater warfare. It is also designed for electronic warfare operations, with systems including Radar-Electronic Countermeasures (R-ECM) and Radar-Electronic Support Measures (R-ESM).
Capable of operating in various terrains and weather conditions, KRI Bung Hatta (370) is expected to undertake a range of missions, including infiltration, exfiltration, and search and rescue (SAR) operations.
