The Indonesian Navy will boost its combat capability with the induction of two MPCS (Multipurpose Combat Ship/PPA) vessels later this year. These ships are part of an Indonesian contract valued at approximately 1.18 billion euros inked in 2024.
Fincantieri is the prime contractor and is coordinating with the other industrial partners, including Leonardo, for the customization of the ships' combat system and the provision of related logistic services.
The two ships were originally built as the fifth and sixth units for the Italian Navy and were formerly named "Marcantonio Colonna" and "Ruggiero di Lauria,".
These ships were renamed KRI Brawijaya-320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, earlier this year in January at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia). Sea trials of both vessels are now underway.
Built at Fincantieri’s integrated Riva Trigoso-Muggiano shipyard, these new vessels will be the largest combat ships in the Indonesian Navy.
The Italian Navy’s MPCS/PPA vessels "Francesco Morosini" and "Raimondo Montecuccoli" had visited Indonesia in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
The MPCS/PPA are a highly versatile class of ship designed to perform a wide range of missions, including frontline combat operations, maritime patrol, rescue, and civil protection activities.
The 143 m long vessels are capable of operating high-speed vessels such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long, with launching through lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the far stern. The MPCS/PPA has a crew of approximately 170 persons and can attain a speed more than 32 knots according to vessel configuration and operational conditions.
It is equipped with a combined diesel, a gas turbine plant (CODAG) and an electric propulsion system. These vessels also have the capacity to supply drinking water to land.
