KRI Nanggala (402), a Type 209/1300 submarine of the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL), is reportedly missing around 95 km North off coast of Bali Island on Wednesday.
The submarine, with 53 men onboard, was conducting a torpedo firing exercise when all contact was lost at around 04:30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB, UTC +7), in an area where the sea depth is 700 meters.
TNI-AL has sent six surface warships and two submarines to the location to assist several others that were already nearby at the time of the incident. The Indonesian government has also requested assistance from Singapore, Malaysia, India and Australia and the first three countries have dispatched their submarine rescue vessels to the area.
“As of now, we have dispatched two other submarines to the location for rescue [operation]. They are already on their way.” said Commodore Julius Widjojono, Head of Information Department of TNI-AL. Confirming what appeared to be an oil leak on the sea surface at the location, he further added: “[about] the oil spills around the area, it’s possible that the fuel tank has been damaged.”
KRI Nanggala (402) is a Type 209/1300 submarine that has been in TNI-AL service since 1981. The ship, together with its sister ship KRI Cakra (401), was built in Germany between 1977 to 1978 and has undergone two refit programs, first in Germany in 1989 and the second in South Korea in 2012.
