KRI Sampari (628)

Indonesian Sampari-Class OPV Retrofitted With Russian Naval Gun

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jun 6, 2021 - : 1:10 am

The Sampari-class Off-shore Patrol Vessel (OPV) KRI Tombak (629) of the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) recently underwent a retrofit process in Surabaya to replace its main gun with Russian-made AU-220M 57 mm Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS). The lead ship of the class, KRI Sampari (628), will also be retrofitted with AU-220M RCWS in the coming weeks.

Both ships were installed with old 40 mm Bofors guns that  were salvaged from KRI Teluk Semangka (512), a TNI-AL Landing Ship Tank (LST) decommissioned in 2013. It is understood that the choice of Russian AU-220M gun is due to the fact that it uses the same ammunition with S-60 anti-aircraft artillery still used by the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD). However, while the first two of the Sampari-class ships are retrofitted with AU-220M RCWS, four other ships of the Sampari-class are fitted with Bofors 57 mm main guns instead.

AU-220M as installed in KRI Tombak (629) is a navalized 57 mm caliber gun inside a fully enclosed turret. It differs from the original system due to the inclusion of a barrel cooling system and several other modifications due to deck space constraints of the OPV. With a maximum firing range of 8 km for aerial targets and 12 km for surface and coastal targets, the gun features independent electro-optical and radar systems that can also be integrated to the ship’s Command and Control system.

Sampari-class OPV is an Indonesian “Kapal Cepat Rudal” (KCR – Fast Missile Boat) type of 60 m length and with a displacement of around 460 tons built by PT PAL, an Indonesian State-Owned Enterprise in shipbuilding industry. With a maximum speed of 28 knots, the ships in this class have a maximum range of about 4500 km. Armed with either AU-220M or Bofors 57 mm main guns, the ships are also equipped with either Chinese-made C-705 or French-made MM-40 Exocet anti-ship missiles.

TNI-AL is planning to acquire a total of 18 Sampari-class OPVs of which four have already been commissioned. Two others are currently being built and are scheduled to be delivered in May 2022.
