Indonesia’s PT PAL to Build Three FREMM Frigates

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jun 14, 2021 - : 11:13 am

While Fincantieri will build in Italy the first three of the six FREMM frigates that the company will deliver to the Indonesian Navy, the other three will be built in the PT PAL shipyard in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s contract with Fincantieri also includes the refurbishment and sale of two Maestrale-class frigates. The modernization of the Maestrale-class frigates, which will be decommissioned  from the Italian Navy, will be carried out in the Fincantieri shipyard.

While the exact configuration of the Indonesian FREMM frigates is yet to be known, the arrangement follows other naval ship contracts between Indonesia and other countries in which some of the ships that Indonesia has ordered will be built or assembled locally.

FREMM or FRegata Europea Multi-Missione (Italian) / FRégate Européenne Multi-Mission (French) is a joint project between Italy and France to build a new class of multi-purpose frigates. Currently, France has received 8 FREMM ships, also known as Aquitaine-class, while Italy has 10 FREMMs or Carlo Bergamini-class frigates. Aside from these two countries, Morocco, Egypt, the U.S. and Indonesia have also operated or ordered FREMM frigates in various configurations.

Able to reach a maximum speed in excess of between 27 to 30 knots, the 5.500 to 6.700 tons displacement FREMM frigates have a maximum range of between 11.000 to 12.600 km at 15 knots cruising speed. Depending on the requirement, FREMM ships can be configured as general purpose, anti-aircraft or anti-submarine frigates with various radars, sensors, weapons and counter-measures.

PT PAL is an Indonesian state-owned enterprise in the commercial and military shipbuilding industry. Its facilities have been producing some of the newest ships of the Indonesian Navy including, but not limited to, corvettes, frigates, landing platform docks and submarines. While the company already has experience in building commercial ships with displacement of up to 50,000 tons, the FREMMs will be the largest and heaviest displacement frigates to be built in Indonesia.
