Indra has completed a new round of tests on its Nemus active protection radar system, integrating it with Leopard 2 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) at the Spanish Army’s Armored Units Instruction Center (CENAD) in Zaragoza.
The trials were conducted in the presence of Brigadier General Luis Sanz Muñoz, director of procurement at the Army’s Logistics Command (MALE), along with personnel from the Army and Indra’s engineering team. The tests aimed to evaluate the compatibility of the Nemus radar with the Leopard platform and followed an earlier series of trials carried out in July at the Army’s Radio Evaluation and Experimentation Center (CEAR) in Guadalajara.
The Nemus system is based on a compact, lightweight AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar designed for use on armoured vehicles and tanks. It can detect, track and identify a range of airborne threats, including drones, micro-drones, anti-tank missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and kinetic energy penetrators such as arrow-type munitions travelling at supersonic speeds. The system enables the deployment of countermeasures to neutralise these threats.
According to Indra, the radar incorporates artificial intelligence to filter out false targets and can resist electronic interference such as jamming. It is also capable of operating under extreme environmental conditions, including wet, cold and hot climates.
The company sees the technology as essential for strengthening European defence autonomy, particularly in modern conflict scenarios where low-cost drones pose a significant risk to high-value platforms such as the Leopard. The Nemus radar is part of Indra’s broader efforts to develop digital solutions for land platforms, which include recent moves to expand its footprint in the market through its Indra Land Vehicles division, acquisition of a controlling stake in Tess Defence, and new industry partnerships.
