Interview: ACM Piboon Vorravanpreecha, Managing Director TAI
What was the purpose behind the establishment of Thai Aviation Industries (TAI)?
Thai Aviation Industries Co., Ltd. (TAI) was established under the Cabinet resolution on September 23, 2003, to promote and support the development of a reliable and internationally recognized aviation industry in Thailand. The company was officially registered on October 31, 2003, with founding participation from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Industry, Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP), the Royal Thai Air Force, and the Department of Civil Aviation.
The primary objectives of TAI’s establishment are to develop Thailand’s aviation industry to meet international standards of safety and reliability, to reduce dependency on foreign maintenance services, and to enhance the skills and capabilities of Thai aviation personnel to a world-class level.
What are the key achievements of TAI from its establishment to the present?
In its early years, TAI’s primary client was the Royal Thai Air Force. Through privileges under the Government Procurement Act, government agencies could directly procure maintenance and aviation services from TAI, enabling more efficient budget and contract management. This helped ensure the Air Force’s operational readiness and mission continuity.
Over time, TAI expanded its business scope by collaborating with aircraft manufacturers (OEMs) and certified maintenance providers. These partnerships have allowed TAI to perform maintenance services domestically to international standards—reducing both repair time and costs, while strengthening Thailand’s aviation self-reliance and long-term defense capabilities.
Since assuming leadership at TAI, what key developments or transformations have been made?
Under my leadership, TAI has laid a strong foundation for professional operations with transparency and good governance. The company has broadened collaborations with aircraft manufacturers to cover all models operated by government agencies. In addition, TAI has continuously invested in human capital by sending technicians for regular training with OEM partners, while also fostering research and development (R&D) to transform Royal Thai Air Force innovations into practical applications.
TAI remains firmly committed to its mission of supporting national security—guided by the principle, “We do business not for business, but we run the business for the security of our country.”
How has TAI collaborated with the Royal Thai Air Force in developing and producing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)?
TAI has partnered with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to further develop RTAF’s research projects, particularly the high-performance solar-powered UAV program known as “M Solar-X.” The project includes fixed-wing and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) variants, as well as a version without solar panels. All four systems were successfully delivered to the RTAF in fiscal year 2025.
What are some of the technological collaborations that TAI has with domestic and international industries?
TAI collaborates with leading global aerospace OEMs such as Airbus, Safran, Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin, SAAB, and Embraer. These partnerships cover sales, maintenance, training, and technology transfer to strengthen Thailand’s aerospace capabilities and align them with international standards.
What major projects or contracts has TAI accomplished in the past year?
TAI’s key achievements include the Royal Thai Air Force aircraft maintenance projects, the M Solar-X UAV production, the C-130H Phase 2 upgrade, the acquisition of H175 VIP helicopters for the Royal Thai Police, and the EC645T2 restoration project for the Royal Thai Navy. These demonstrate strong confidence in TAI’s capabilities.
What role does TAI play in the Royal Thai Air Force’s Gripen E/F acquisition program?
TAI has long collaborated with SAAB, the Gripen manufacturer. The current acquisition expands the partnership to include new aircraft models and enhanced technology transfer covering air defense systems, maintenance capabilities, and the integration of advanced technical data link systems within Thailand.
Which TAI project stands out as most beneficial to the Royal Thai Air Force?
TAI’s long-term aircraft maintenance and logistics support for nearly all Royal Thai Air Force fleets including F-16, Gripen, T-50, C-130H, Airbus, ATR72-500, and multiple helicopter types is the company’s most outstanding achievement, ensuring national defense readiness for over 22 years.
What, according to you, are some of the challenges that need to be addressed?
Key challenges include limited facility space and the growing demand for specialized manpower. TAI prioritizes continuous personnel development and investment in modern technology to support increasingly complex operations in the future.
Are TAI’s current facilities sufficient for future development?
TAI’s current facilities within Royal Thai Air Force premises are adequate for military maintenance, but future expansion into civil aviation will require additional modern facilities to support the company’s long term growth.
What are the defense-related production projects that TAI is involved in?
TAI collaborates with international partners for technology transfer to locally produce defense systems such as Kamikaze Drones, Anti-Drone systems, and Guided Glide Bombs — enhancing Thailand’s self-reliance in defense technology.
What are the types of military aircraft that Thailand can produce domestically?
Thailand is capable of developing unmanned aerial vehicles, light training aircraft, and certain aircraft components domestically provided that continuous investment in R&D and effective international technology transfer are maintained.
What is TAI’s development policy for the future?
TAI aims to become a leading aviation hub in the region by advancing maintenance technologies, expanding UAV production, and strengthening global partnerships to ensure sustainable growth of Thailand’s aviation industry.
How significant is the Defense & Security 2025 exhibition to Thailand?
