Israel Air Force May Allow F-35 Test Aircraft for Other Users

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) may allow its special F-35 test aircraft to be used to test special systems for other operators of the stealth aircraft.

Besides Israel, only two other countries—the U.S and Britain – have such a test aircraft equipped with special systems.

Defence sources told Asian Defence Technology that while the priority is to serve the operational requirements of the IAF, “it is very likely” that Israel will, in the future, allow other countries to use the test aircraft.

The IAF F-35 test aircraft is flying daily with Israeli developed systems. Some have been approved and are already installed on some of the operational F-35 used by the IAF, while others that require changes in the aircraft fuselage will be installed only in the F-35s that will be supplied to Israel in the coming years.

Israel has ordered 50 Lockheed Martin F-35 . Of these, 30 have been delivered. Another six will be delivered this year.

The recent increased use of the IAF’s F-35 in combat, in different arenas, is the primary reason why Israel wants to install a growing list of systems on the stealth fighter. Since the delivery of the F-35 (Adir) test aircraft, different systems have been installed.

One of the advantages of the F-35 is its capability to absorb electronic signals from radars and air defence systems and to quickly classify them, geolocate them, and display them to the aircraft’s pilot. The stealth aircraft then is capable of distributing the electronic data to other combat participants.

The critical data is collected by the passive antennas embedded in the F-35s that feed signals information to the fighter aircraft computers. Using interferometry, the Israeli F-35 will compute the slightest time delay between when a signal hits one antenna compared to another, to locate target with high accuracy.
