Israel to Help Ukraine Modernize MiG-29 Fighters

: Sep 9, 2019 - : 6:52 am

Ukraine is negotiating with Israeli company Elbit Systems in an effort to sign a contract that will include the upgrade of the Ukrainian MIG -29 fighter aircraft.

The proposed upgrade includes a totally new cockpit and new avionic systems. The value of negotiated contract is not known because the details of the upgrade package have not been finalized.

Israeli sources say that what can undermine the contract is the fierce opposition made by Moscow.

Several years ago, after some arms deal were signed, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Israel against selling weapons to Ukraine, calling it a “devastating move ”

Israel has been selling military equipment to Ukraine for over two decades. Israeli sources said that with the recent election of Volodymyr Zelensky, for Ukraine president, there is a good chance to increase defense ties between the two countries.

Israel has maintained a neutral stance since the outbreak of the Donbass war between with Russia and the Ukraine in 2014.

Elbit systems refused to comment on the fact that there are negotiations about the upgrade of the Ukrainian MIG 29.
