Israeli Navy Wants More Weapons and Sensors on Seahawk Helicopters

: Feb 15, 2022 - : 12:49 am

More advanced sensors and additional weapon systems – this is the new demand of the Israeli Navy related to the Seahawk helicopters it will get from the U.S.

The additional systems list has been updated with input from the Israeli Air Force that will operate the helicopters.

The sensors package will be based on the one installed on the AS 565 helicopters, operated jointly by the IAF and Israeli Navy, but will feature additional capabilities. “The new threats in the Israel maritime arena have brought the two forces to update the list of systems ” an IAF source said.

The sensor package designed for the Sea-Hawk includes an ELTA maritime radar and other payloads that will enable the SH60F to perform anti-terror and anti-submarine missions with other aerial and maritime platforms. It will also enable close cooperation with the Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) maritime version of the Heron-1 UAV.

The new sensor package will operate with the U.S made systems installed in the helicopters. Some years ago , the U.S has approved the transfer of eight excess SH-60F Sea-Hawk Helicopters to Israel.
The approval is for the transfer of the helicopters with additional equipment according to Excess Defense Articles (EDA) Program.
The SH-60F Sea-Hawk will be operated by the IAF, from the four SAAR -6 corvettes now being built in a German ship yard.

It is now certain that the helicopters will be armed with different weapon systems. Sources said that a Sea-Hawk with missiles can answer the operational need to kill an immediate threat. The imminent threat on the Israeli natural gas pumping rigs in the Mediterranean is as an example for such a threat, they added.

The IAF has equipped its AH-64 D combat helicopters with different variants of the Rafael Spike missile.
