Israel’s Aeronautics Unveils its First Hybrid UAS

Israeli company Aeronautics has unveiled its first Hybrid UAS – operated by an advanced combustion / electric power unit.

The company’s combat-proven Orbiter 3 Small Tactical Unmanned Aerial System (STUAS) is one of the lightest and most advanced covert platforms available today.

According to Dany Eshchar, Aeronautics deputy CEO Although providing an endurance of over 6.5 hours and a range of 150 Km from its control station, Aeronautics sought to significantly increase its endurance, without harming its ability to conduct clandestine operations. The Orbiter-3 LE (Long Endurance) is an upgrade to the existing system and is the first true hybrid UAV platform.

The Orbiter 3H is an advanced Hybrid engine that combines combustion engine and batteries to drive electric engine, allowing switching seamlessly between its batteries and the combustion engine throughout the duration of the flight. This new capability significant improve the flight endurance with an emphasis on increasing flight time over target, while maintaining operational assets of the Orbiter 3 platform

The new version is operated by a 3 men team and according to the company inaudible above 3,500 ft. It has over 12 hours Hybrid endurance. Over 10 hours gas endurance and 2.5 hours electrical endurance.

Takeoff and recovery are automatic and in addition a net landing option.

The Hybrid version has a 14.5 feet wingspan, MTOW OF 70 pounds, and a max payload capability of12 pounds. Max speed is 70 kts and the datalink in LOS is up to 93 miles.
