Istanbul to Become Central Hub in Rolls-Royce Global MRO Expansion

The global aerospace maintenance landscape is undergoing a significant shift as Rolls-Royce and Turkish Technic formally break ground on a massive new aero engine maintenance facility at Istanbul Airport. This project, which recently transitioned from its 2025 planning phase into active construction, is set to become one of the largest and most advanced centres within the Rolls-Royce global maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network. By 2027, the facility will provide full-service support for the latest generation of Trent engines, specifically the Trent XWB-84, Trent XWB-97, and Trent 7000 models, which power the Airbus A350 and A330neo wide-body aircraft.

The investment is part of a broader TRY 100 billion (US$2.32 billion) infrastructure initiative by Turkish Airlines, which includes new hangars, cargo terminals, and data centres. ​The proximity of Istanbul to the eastern markets allows for shorter ferry flight times and more flexible logistics for Asia-based operators compared to deep-European facilities. As the Asia Pacific fleet grows, this new centre will provide the necessary "overflow" capacity to ensure that regional supply chain bottlenecks do not ground aircraft during peak travel seasons. This move signals a clear intent by Turkish Technic to transition from a regional player into a global MRO titan, capable of servicing the world’s most sophisticated engine technology.

The agreement includes provisions for local engineering talent development and the integration of domestic suppliers into the Rolls-Royce global supply chain. By domesticating 20% of engine part repairs, the facility ensures that high-end technical knowledge remains within the local ecosystem, fostering a new generation of aerospace engineers.
