Japan Airlines (JAL) has confirmed an order for 17 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, expanding its 737 MAX backlog to 38 firm orders. The airline plans to introduce these aircraft on its domestic routes as Japan continues to experience record levels of tourism.
"The 737 has been the backbone of our single-aisle fleet for nearly 50 years, and we are honoured to continue its legacy as part of our future fleet,” said Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines. “We are excited to add more 737-8s to deliver a safe and secure journey to our valued customers with a sophisticated flying experience."
The 737-8 is expected to offer JAL improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, with a 15% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to the 737-800s it will replace. The commonality across the 737 family is also expected to facilitate integration into JAL’s existing fleet.
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, welcomed the order, stating: “We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are honored by their decision to double down on the 737 MAX for the airline’s fleet modernization program. By selecting the 737-8, Japan Airlines will gain operational and economic efficiencies, positioning them for success in the years ahead.”
JAL’s 737-8 aircraft will also introduce the Boeing Sky Interior, which features LED lighting, larger windows, and expanded overhead storage.
The airline has a long-standing relationship with Boeing and currently operates 767s, 777s, and Next-Generation 737-800s. It was also among the first to introduce the 787 Dreamliner and has over 50 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft in service. JAL recently ordered an additional 10 787-9s to support increasing international travel demand.
Meanwhile, JAL’s subsidiary, ZIPAIR Tokyo, has announced plans to expand its international capacity by incorporating 10 787-9 aircraft previously operated by JAL. Boeing Global Services has been contracted to carry out interior modifications on these aircraft.
