The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) fleet has a new entrant. The first of 22 Mogami-class multirole frigates was commissioned on March 22, at a ceremony held in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan, and inducted into the Mine Warfare Force. The shipbuilder is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems. The multirole ships in the class qualare intended for surveillance missions in waters surrounding the Japanese archipelago and will have the ability to conduct anti-mine warfare operations.
The compact 132.5-meter-long vessel, named Kumano, cost about 46 billion yen (US$382 million). The contract for the project was signed in October 2018 by the JMSDF and the vessel was launched in November 20202. The 3,900-tonne vessel will have a crew complement of about 90, a beam of 16.3 m, and a hull draught of 9 m. JS Mogami is expected to enter service with the JMSDF in April.
Powered by a combined diesel and gas (CODAG) propulsion system featuring two MAN 12V28/33D STC diesel engines and one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine, the Mogami-class warships can attain a top speed of about 30 kt. The frigates are expected to be armed with the navalized version of the Type-03 medium-range, surface-to-air missile, a 5-inch (127mm)/62-calibre gun, canister-launched anti-ship missiles, and a SeaRAM close-in weapon system that is expected to use upgraded RIM-116C Rolling Airframe Missiles. According to reports, the ships have been designed to carry a helicopter as well as an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). They will also be equipped with a vertical launch system (VLS) and an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), making it the first time that a Japanese frigate will have those systems installed. Capable of anti-submarine warfare operations, the frigate will have variable depth sonar and towed array sonar systems. As per a contract that was approved in December 2018, Japan plans to build 10 ships of the Mogami class under its Mid-Term Defense Program (MTDP).
