Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have confirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation. During a meeting on Saturday (Jan. 11) in Bogor, Indonesia, the leaders discussed several initiatives aimed at bolstering their strategic partnership amid growing regional challenges, including China's increasing influence.
Japan has agreed to provide Indonesia with high-speed patrol boats as part of a broader defence assistance programme to enhance maritime security. This follows a previous 2021 bilateral agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. Both leaders also confirmed plans for a third round of "two-plus-two" talks between their foreign and defence ministers later this year.
In addition, Japan and Indonesia have agreed to resume their joint warship development project, initially delayed under the previous Indonesian administration. Following talks between Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Japanese Defence Minister Nakatani Gen last week (Jan. 7) in Jakarta, Ministry of Defence spokesperson Frega Wenas confirmed the continuation of negotiations between the two nations to develop warships based on Japan's Mogami-class frigates. These advanced multi-role vessels are equipped with stealth capabilities, electronic warfare systems, and a range of weaponry.
Despite challenges such as Japan’s export restrictions, the talks are progressing, with the first ship expected to take at least three years to complete if the deal goes ahead. Initial production will occur in Japan, with future plans possibly involving Indonesian shipyards and local content.
Prime Minister Ishiba also highlighted Japan’s intention to support Indonesia’s defence capabilities, emphasising their shared values as "comprehensive strategic partners." Discussions covered energy security, human resource development, and disaster prevention. President Prabowo expressed appreciation for Japan's commitment and welcomed Ishiba's invitation to visit Japan later this year.
Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order and agreed to work together to address global challenges. Their strengthened defence ties reflect a mutual recognition of the need to safeguard regional peace and stability.
