The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in Nov. 2019 to replace the carrier’s three Saab 340s. ATR, which signed the deal at the Farnborough air show, says JAL Group subsidiary HAC will begin operating the turboprops in 2020.

ATR chief executive Christian Scherer says that “JAL Group’s endorsement is testimony to the relevance of our product in a most advanced society that is concerned with comfort, environmentally-friendliness and the benefits of regional connectivity”.

The Saab 340s have a seating capacity of 36, according to Yoichiro Kuwano, Hokkaido Air System’s president. The precise configuration of the new, 50-seat-class ATR 42-600s has yet to be decided.

“The aircraft has extensive experience with operations in cold winter, which will increase the reliability of the operation in cold Hokkaido,” Kuwano says.
