The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has officially retired the Oyashio-class diesel-electric attack submarine JS Uzushio (SS-592) following 25 years of active service. An ensign-lowering ceremony was held on 19 December 2025 at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture, marking the end of the vessel’s operational life. Commissioned in March 2000, the Uzushio was the third boat in its class and significantly contributed to Japan’s underwater warfare capabilities during a period of shifting regional dynamics.
The decommissioning reflects Japan’s disciplined fleet renewal strategy, which balances the retirement of ageing platforms with the induction of next-generation technology. Over its quarter-century career, the Uzushio reportedly covered a distance equivalent to 12 times the Earth's circumference. The vessel was a regular participant in major international exercises, including Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) and bilateral training with the US Navy, serving as a critical platform for developing the tactical proficiency of the JMSDF’s submarine fleet.
According to reports from original sources Zona Militar and Militarnyi, the retirement of SS-592 follows the decommissioning of its sister ship, the TSS-3609 Michishio, earlier this year. These moves are part of a broader structural transition as the JMSDF maintains its legislated 22-boat operational fleet. While older Oyashio-class units are being phased out, they are being replaced by the sophisticated Taigei-class submarines, which feature advanced lithium-ion battery technology for enhanced underwater endurance and stealth.
The retirement of the Uzushio comes at a pivotal time for maritime security in the Asia Pacific. As regional competitors rapidly expand their underwater fleets, Tokyo has prioritised the qualitative edge of its Force. The Taigei-class replacements, costing approximately 70 billion yen (US$470 million) to 80 billion yen (US$530 million) per unit, represent a significant leap in capability over the 1990s-era Oyashio design. This modernisation is essential for Japan to maintain effective anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) capabilities across the First Island Chain.
Japan’s submarine industrial base, led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, remains one of the most stable in the world due to its consistent annual build cycle. Unlike many Western counterparts that extend hulls for 35 to 40 years, the JMSDF typically retires or converts boats to training status at the 20-to-25-year mark. This ensures the fleet remains at the cutting edge of sensor and propulsion technology while providing a steady workflow for domestic shipyards, a model increasingly scrutinised by allies looking to bolster their own sovereign shipbuilding sectors.
