Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) is showcasing its latest prototype unmanned helicopter, the K-RACER-X2, at DSEI Japan 2025, as part of its broader push into next-generation aerial mobility solutions. Designed for cargo transport in remote and high-risk environments, the rotary-wing UAV reflects Kawasaki’s commitment to addressing urgent social issues including labour shortages, ageing populations, and the increasing need for rapid disaster response.
The K-RACER-X2 was first introduced at the Japan International Aerospace Exhibition in Tokyo in October 2024, and has since entered flight testing. It is the second-generation prototype of the K-RACER programme—short for "Kawasaki Researching Autonomic Compound to Exceed Rotorcraft"—which seeks to create a viable unmanned platform capable of performing autonomous cargo transport missions over medium distances.
The K-RACER-X2 incorporates a reciprocating engine based on the high-performance powerplant used in Kawasaki’s Ninja H2 motorcycle, showcasing the company's ability to transfer advanced technologies across its automotive and aerospace portfolios. This engine powers a lightweight and compact platform with a 7.0-metre rotor diameter and an overall height of 2.0 metres. It can carry payloads of up to 200 kg, cruise at approximately 140 km/h, and achieve a range of 100 kilometres or more, with an endurance of up to one hour.
The aircraft is engineered to perform reliably in adverse weather, tolerating wind speeds of up to 18 metres per second. It is also designed to operate in environments that are logistically challenging or physically hazardous for human workers. Potential applications include supply delivery to isolated or mountainous regions, over-water cargo transport to island communities, and emergency logistics during disaster response operations.
Kawasaki aims to position the K-RACER-X2 as a practical alternative to manual, labour-intensive transport methods, particularly in Japan’s rural regions where the effects of depopulation and workforce shortages are most acutely felt. The system is envisioned to operate either autonomously or via remote control, allowing for flexible deployment depending on mission requirements and available infrastructure.
The UAV is part of Kawasaki’s wider effort to contribute to future logistics and infrastructure resilience, especially in the context of Japan’s demographic and environmental challenges. As flight testing continues, enhancements in autonomy, control systems, and endurance are expected to follow in later development stages.
In addition to the K-RACER-X2, Kawasaki’s exhibit at DSEI Japan 2025 includes its C-2 military transport aircraft and the P-1 maritime patrol aircraft, both operated by Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. The company is also displaying a range of its domestically developed jet engines, including turbojet and turbofan systems, underscoring its diverse capabilities in propulsion and aerospace engineering.
By integrating innovative solutions like the K-RACER-X2 into its aerospace offering, Kawasaki is signalling its intent to play a greater role in the development of unmanned systems that support both national resilience and regional logistics transformation.
