The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has confirmed that the KD Pendekar (3513), a Handalan-class fast attack craft, sank at 15:54 on Sunday, 25th August. The vessel struck an underwater object during a routine patrol approximately two miles off the coast of Tanjung Penyusop, Johor, resulting in severe flooding in the engine room. This forced the captain to order an evacuation of the ship's 39 crew members.
All crew members were safely rescued by a nearby merchant ship. Additionally, a Singaporean police vessel was present at the scene to offer assistance.
Following the incident, Malaysia’s Defence Minister, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, stated that the ministry is awaiting a comprehensive report from the RMN about the sinking of the KD Pendekar. "We do not deny that some of our ships are too old, but that may not be the cause. The cause, as was earlier said, is the leak is believed to be from the vessel hitting an underwater object and we are investigating," he said, according to the Malaysian news agency Bernama on Monday, 26th August. "However, we are grateful that no casualties were involved," he added.
The KD Pendekar (3513) is one of four Handalan-class vessels constructed in 1976 by the Swedish company Karlskrona Varvet, now part of SAAB Kockums. The ship was commissioned into active duty with the Royal Malaysian Navy in 1979 and has been in service since then. The vessel, with a displacement of 240 tonnes, is armed with a Bofors 57 mm main gun and a Bofors 40 mm secondary gun. It was originally equipped with four Exocet MM38 anti-ship missiles, which have since been removed due to obsolescence.
The RMN has indicated that efforts will be focused on salvaging the vessel to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.
