KLM- Sustainable Synthetic

KLM Carries Out First Flight With Sustainable Synthetic Kerosene

: Feb 11, 2021 - : 1:52 pm

KLM Airlines flight powered with sustainably derived synthetic aviation fuel operated a passenger flight from Amsterdam to Madrid last month in a world first, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has said .

“I am proud that KLM is today operating the industry-first flight using synthetic kerosene made from renewable sources. The transition from fossil fuel to sustainable alternatives is one of the largest challenges in aviation,” said Pieter Elbers, KLM chief executive. “Fleet renewal contributed significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions, but the upscaling of production and the use of sustainable aviation fuel will make the biggest difference for the current generation of aircraft”.

The KLM aircraft used regular fuel mixed with 500 litres (132 gallons) of synthetic kerosene produced by Royal Dutch Shell, with CO2, water, and renewable solar and wind energy, along with regular fuel to power the aircraft.

Marjan van Loon, Shell’s president for the Netherlands, said the aim now is to turn synthetic fuel from “something that is technically possible to something that is economically viable,” reducing costs and accelerating production.

“Making the aviation industry more sustainable is a challenge facing us all,” Dutch Infrastructure Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen said. “Today, with this world first, we are stepping into a new chapter of our aviation”.

KLM is a pioneer in the use of sustainable biofuel. In June 2011, KLM also operated the first commercial powered partly by a biofuel flight. Since that flight to Paris, numerous KLM flights using sustainable biofuel have been operated by various KLM aircraft types.
