Late in 2022, Kongsberg Defence Australia signed a contract with prime contractor Raytheon promising five years’ worth of sustainment for the Australian Army’s new NASAMS (which stands for National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) air defence system.
The deal, worth AUD9 million (USD million), covers recurring support services for Kongsberg-supplied subsystems like the Fire Distribution Centre, Canister Launcher and NASAMS classroom trainer. Kongsberg Defence Australia will also provide field service representatives.
John Fry, Kongsberg Defence Australia’s General Manager, enthused: ‘This announcement highlights the close partnership shared between the Kongsberg teams in Norway and Australia, both working together to ensure our local workforce has the technical skills and expertise to support this transformational capability for the Australian Army.’
The procurement falls under Project Land 19 Phase 7B, and Australia is the eleventh nation to select NASAMS.
The air defence capabilities of the Australian Defence Force are relatively weak, with the army currently relying on Saab’s RBS 70 ground-based air defence system. The fully networked and distributed NASAMS will give the army a much-needed beyond-visual-range capability.
Australian entities also engaged in Project Land 19 Phase 7B are CEA Technologies for radars, and Thales Australia for Hawkei transport vehicles.
