Korean Air Reduces Routes, Capacity to Japan

: Aug 21, 2019 - : 2:53 am

Korean Air has made significant route cuts in the South Korea-Japan market, as political tension between the two countries is increasingly impacting traffic.

The airline announced the suspension of six Japan routes either indefinitely or temporarily, and it will also reduce frequencies on another five.

The airline will suspend its Busan-Osaka flights from September 16. Currently, 14 flights are operated on the route per week.

The routes linking South Korea’s Jeju with Osaka and Narita Airport near Tokyo will be suspended from November 1. Korean Air operates three and four flights per week on the Jeju-Narita and Jeju-Osaka routes, respectively.

In late July, the airline announced that it will suspend its Busan-Sapporo flights from September 3.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoted a Korean Air official as saying that the airline decided to adjust supply following a continued drop in demand for trips to Japan since the middle of July.

South Korean airlines have decided to operate less frequently on at least 60 routes to Japan, according to the news agency.

Korean Air also said it will temporarily suspend flight services connecting Incheon Airport, near Seoul, with Japan’s Asahikawa, Kagoshima and Komatsu on September 29 or later.

The number of flights between Incheon and Okinawa and those linking Busan with Narita and Fukuoka will be reduced between September and November, it said.
