Korean Air has announced plans to invest KRW 1.2 trillion (844.08 million USD) in the development of an Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Aviation Safety Research and Development Centre in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. The project aims to establish a key hub for future mobility technologies and aerospace innovation in South Korea.
The planned facility is part of the airline’s broader strategy to advance its technological capabilities and position itself as a leader in next-generation aviation. It will support research and pilot training, as well as initiatives in aviation safety. The project also aligns with Korean Air’s preparations for a post-merger future following its integration with Asiana Airlines.
A signing ceremony formalising the initiative was held on 30 April at the Bucheon Arts Center, attended by Korean Air Vice Chairman Keehong Woo, Bucheon Mayor Yong-eek Cho, Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) CEO Han-Joon Lee, and Bucheon Urban Development Corporation CEO Myung-hee Won.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with operations expected to start in May 2030. The centre will cover more than 65,800 square metres—roughly equivalent to ten football fields—and accommodate over 1,000 staff, including researchers and instructors.
The Bucheon site will consist of several key components. The UAV Research Centre will focus on developing advanced software and artificial intelligence for unmanned aerial vehicles, supporting both commercial and defence aerospace innovations. The Flight Training Centre will consolidate the flight operations of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, becoming the largest pilot training facility in Asia. The number of flight simulators will increase from 18 to 30, enabling the annual training of up to 21,600 pilots. The Safety Experience Centre will provide immersive safety training for aviation personnel while offering educational programs for local businesses, students, and residents to promote workplace safety.
“This is more than just a facility; it’s the launchpad for Korea’s future in aviation,” said a Korean Air spokesperson. “Through bold investments in research, training, and technology, we are laying the foundation to lead the future of air mobility while deepening our commitment to safety, sustainability, and global connectivity.”
The project supports Korean Air’s stated mission of “Connecting for a Better World” and reflects its ongoing focus on innovation, workforce development, and engagement with local communities.
