KRI Prabu Siliwangi (321), the Indonesian Navy’s newest multipurpose combat ship (PPA), officially departed from Base Navale Della Spezia in Italy on 11 February 2026, beginning its long voyage to Indonesian waters.
The frigate left La Spezia in a formal send-off ceremony attended by Indonesian naval officers and diplomats, including Indonesia’s Ambassador to Italy and the Holy See.
The departure marks a key milestone in the ongoing modernization of the Indonesian Navy’s fleet. KRI Prabu Siliwangi is the second of two PPA-class vessels acquired from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri under a broader cooperation program with Italy. Its sister ship, KRI Brawijaya (320), arrived in Indonesia in September 2025.
Before setting sail, Prabu Siliwangi completed a series of final preparations in Italian waters, including sea trials and weapons-system tests designed to verify its readiness for long-distance operations.
According to the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral Muhammad Ali, the frigate will circumnavigate Africa en route to Indonesia, transiting the Mediterranean into the Atlantic, around the Cape of Good Hope, and across the Indian Ocean.
“KRI Prabu Siliwangi departed yesterday. Because it is taking the African route, circling Africa, it will probably arrive in Indonesia in early April,” Admiral Ali said as quoted by the Indonesian national news agency Antara on Thursday (Feb. 12), noting the extensive planning involved in the voyage and the significance of the deployment for national maritime defense.
Once home, KRI Prabu Siliwangi is slated to join the Indonesian Navy’s Second Fleet Command, operating alongside KRI Brawijaya and strengthening Indonesia’s surface combatant capabilities. The PPA platform, at approximately 143 meters in length and capable of multi-domain missions from patrol to high-intensity operations, represents one of the most advanced surface combatants in the region.
