As deliveries of Leonardo’s AW189 super medium helicopter and other rotorcraft types continue to grow in the Asia Pacific region, Leonardo has hundreds of its helicopters performing missions such as offshore, utility, homeland security, law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical services, maritime patrol, military naval roles and armed reconnaissance.
Leonardo continues to expand its presence in the Malaysian market and is increasing its capabilities here and already operates a regional hub for Customer Support and Training near Kuala Lumpur.
The Italian manufacturer is also looking for greater success in the firefighting market.
The AW189 has proved popular with firefighting operators and Malaysia’s Fire and Rescue Department (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia) and Korea’s Seoul Fire Department are beginning operations with their AW189s.
Following these two operators of the AW189 will be the Tokyo Fire Department, who will also add the super medium helicopter to their fleet.
As the Asia Pacific region is considered by the company as having the strongest growth prospects for its aerospace and defence capabilities, Leonardo is attaching heavy importance to its activities here. Leonardo’s AW139, AW169 andAW189 helicopters are proving popular for firefighting, search and rescue and disaster relief requirements. Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and Australia are the key markets in the region, for Leonardo, which was the number one civil helicopter manufacturer in terms of value in 2018 with a 40 per cent market share, an increase of seven per cent as compared to 2017.
