Leonardo Puts on Strong Show at DIMDEX

: Mar 12, 2018 - : 6:46 pm

Italian defence conglomerate Leonardo showcased a range of maritime defence capabilities at the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition & Conference (DIMDEX) which has just concluded in Qatar.

Leonardo showcased its new Marlin 40 naval gun mount for the first time in the country. The OTO Marlin 40 has been designed for use on fast, lightweight vessels, which still require highly capable offensive equipment, which can be used for anti-missile defence, anti-aircraft warfare and ship-to-ship engagement.

The remotely controlled version, weighs only 2.1 tonne and the compact system requires no deck penetration.

Leonardo also highlighted its strong defence partnership with Qatar, where the company has been present for over 20 years. Qatar has ordered 21 new-generation AW139 helicopters for several military applications, while, in the commercial market, Gulf Helicopters operates a fleet of AW139s for offshore transport missions and of AW189s for the same application.

“We have a strong position in the Gulf’s commercial and military helicopter markets and see significant future opportunities for various helicopter types on display in Doha, which also include the NH90 multirole military helicopter,” a Leonardo official told Daily News.

Leonardo also displayed Directed Infra-Red Counter-Measure (DIRCM) systems and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) equipment at the show.

The 24 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft ordered by Qatar at the end of 2017 will be fitted with the Leonardo-led ‘Captor-E’ E-scan/AESA radars.
