Leonardo’s Latest Uncooled Handheld Offers Cutting Edge Technology

: Nov 10, 2020 - : 4:41 am

Leonardo’s Latest Uncooled Handheld called NOX, a compact, lightweight portable target localiser is capable of optimal performance under any atmospheric conditions.

The Italian Army has already placed orders for approximately 1000 units.

Developed by Leonardo’s Electronics Division, the system is composed of an uncooled infrared sensor and a dual Day Full HD sensor and was developed as part of the Forza NEC V Fase project, in partnership with the Special Forces 185th Division, RRAO (“Folgore” target acquisition reconnaissance parachute regiment) of Livorno.

The optics adopt advanced high-resolution infrared technology and work was done at Officine Galileo’s historic research department in Campi Bisenzio, which is now part of Leonardo’s Electronics Division.

The complex electro-optical system includes an infrared camera unit, two TV cameras (one of which has see-spot capacity), an “eye-safe” Laser Range Finder, a digital magnetic compass, GPS, a Bluetooth unit and a Wi-Fi receiver. NOX can also be integrated with a NIR laser pointer.

The electronic component was developed based on SWAP-C (Size, Weight and Power – Cost) requirements, according to a net-centric philosophy, connecting the handheld system to an integrated tactical communications network to ensure real-time image, video and data transmission.

NOX uses a target marker to identify the target while simultaneously registering data on azimuth, elevation and distance, calculating its absolute position. It employs an e-Zoom to improve optical performance and image processing algorithms, including image stabilisation and a thermal scanner function.

Intuitive colour graphics are displayed on an OLED HD micro-display viewed through an eyepiece which permits diopter adjustment. Low energy consumption ensures more than five hours of autonomous operation, while compliance with standards MIL-STD 810G and MIL-STD 461F guarantees the system’s efficiency even under extreme operating conditions.
