South Korea's LIG Defense & Aerospace is highlighting its defense technologies at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, where it announced a partnership with Airbus Helicopters to develop next-generation unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for military operations.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on advanced unmanned aviation technologies, combining LIG Defense & Aerospace's sensors, weapons and mission systems with Airbus Helicopters' unmanned aircraft platforms.
The agreement focuses on integrating precision sensors, guided weapon systems and artificial intelligence (AI) into future unmanned aircraft to enhance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions.
Executives from both companies attended the signing ceremony at the Farnborough airshow, including Shin Ik-hyun, chief executive of LIG Defense & Aerospace, and Matthieu Louvot, chief executive of Airbus Helicopters.
LIG Defense & Aerospace said the partnership will also explore the application of AI technologies in both unmanned aircraft and ground control stations to improve mission planning, target identification and operational efficiency.
The South Korean defense company develops a broad range of military systems, including precision-guided munitions, naval weapons, ISR systems, command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) technologies, avionics, electronic warfare systems, drones and next-generation autonomous defense platforms.
Shin said the agreement reflects the companies' shared goal of developing advanced unmanned aviation capabilities to meet evolving defense requirements in South Korea and international markets.
Louvot said combining Airbus' unmanned aircraft with LIG Defense & Aerospace's mission systems and sensors could deliver new capabilities for military customers as demand grows for autonomous and AI-enabled defense technologies.
The partnership comes as governments around the world accelerate investment in unmanned systems, artificial intelligence and autonomous capabilities, driven by lessons from recent conflicts and the growing importance of intelligence gathering, maritime surveillance and precision strike operations.
