Lion Air ‘Urgently Requires’ More 737 MAX

: Aug 21, 2019 - : 2:48 am

Indonesia’s Lion Air “urgently requires” more Boeing Co 737 MAX jets to support its growth strategy once regulators approve the grounded model’s return to service.

According to a Reuters report, the airline’s co-founder, Rusdi Kirana, said the low-cost airline, which had previously threatened to cancel its order for 187 jets worth $21 billion at list prices, would need to be satisfied with the outcome of negotiations with Boeing before taking the planes.

“If they don’t satisfy us, we will cancel the contract,” Kirana said.

On Tuesday, Boeing Co said that it plans to add extra staff and hire “a few hundred” temporary employees at an airport in Washington state where it is storing many grounded 737 MAX jetliners, a key step in its best-case plan for resuming deliveries to airline customers in October.

The company is seeking avionics technicians, aircraft mechanics, airframe mechanics and aircraft electricians.

Boeing expects to file an application to recertify the 737 Max by the end of September and hopes the Federal Aviation Administration and other regulators will approve software fixes in the plane sometime this fall. If that happens, Boeing expects airlines to return the 737 Max to service by the end of the year.

Once the Max is once again deemed safe to fly, Boeing will begin the process of upgrading the software on parked planes and then deliver them to customers.

Company executives admit there is no timeline for delivering parked Max planes because airlines have yet to determine how quickly they will put those 737s into flight schedules. As a result, Boeing will need temporary workers to ensure the parked planes at Moses Lake stay maintained and ready for delivery.
