The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has formalised a contract to acquire 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defence strategy. This procurement, facilitated by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and KNDS Deutschland, is the first time Lithuania has established an armoured unit. The country also becomes the 23rd user of the Leopard 2 tank.
The agreement, valued at €950 million, includes not only the tanks but also a comprehensive package covering spare parts and logistical support.
Lithuania is the first nation to implement a plan to procure the Leopard 2A8 in collaboration with Germany under the Common Procurement Agreement. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Europe’s collective defence capabilities, with other countries expected to join the project in the future.
The deal follows the signing of a purchase confirmation by Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė, witnessed by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
Lithuania will receive the latest version of the Leopard 2, equipped with advanced features such as the Trophy Active Protection System. This system, also adopted by Norway and Germany, offers 360-degree protection against anti-tank missiles and drones.
