Lockheed Unveils MORFIUS X-Rotor Counter-Drone System

Lockheed Martin unveiled its MORFIUS X-Rotor airborne counter-unmanned aerial system at the Farnborough International Airshow.

The novel platform utilizes high-power microwave energy to neutralize hostile drone swarms in mid-air while ensuring complete reusable operational capability. Designed as a ground-launched vehicle, the platform can defeat more than 50 enemy drones during a single operational sortie.

The rapid proliferation of low-cost commercial and militarized swarms has created severe operational headaches for defense commanders globally. Traditional kinetic interceptors remain vastly expensive when compared to cheap incoming suicide drones, leading to asymmetric economic attrition. By integrating a lightweight high-power microwave payload onto an airborne frame, the system fries internal electronic circuits of multiple targets simultaneously without relying on expensive dedicated fire-control radars. Furthermore, the system remains sensor and command-and-control agnostic, enabling seamless integration into existing integrated air defense networks.

The system aligns directly with current tactical requirements for flexible defense architecture. Industry observers noted that the system builds upon experimental flight test variants that the company has flown continuously since 2017. Recent live-fire trials conducted across Arizona, California, and Oklahoma successfully verified overall flight handling, intercept guidance, and target lethality under contested electromagnetic conditions.

"MORFIUS sets a new benchmark for counter-drone capability – delivering a high kill rate while keeping the cost per kill low. By leveraging a lightweight, field reusable high-power microwave architecture, we provide the most effective, low-cost solution on the market today and demonstrate Lockheed Martin's ability to field innovative, affordable technologies at the speed our American and allied troops need," said — Randy Crites, Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Advanced Programs.

Asia-Pacific Perspective

For the Asia-Pacific region, the introduction of reusable high-power microwave counter-drone capabilities carries major strategic weight. Tensions across maritime corridors such as the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait have increasingly featured dense uncrewed surveillance and strike formations. Military forces in Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific, operating under strict procurement budgets, face growing vulnerabilities against massed drone saturation tactics. Adopting reusable airborne effectors offers a financially viable doctrine for regional armed forces seeking to shield critical infrastructure, naval surface fleets, and forward bases without depleting limited surface-to-air missile stockpiles.

As defense planners look toward multi-domain operations, the development of scalable electronic warfare systems represents a pivotal shift in asymmetric warfare defense. Prototype production for both the airframe and the microwave payload is currently being accelerated to meet frontline demands. Future operational flight testing scheduled for the coming months will further validate system durability, field recovery procedures, and multi-platform swarm engagement capabilities.
