Lufthansa Group has begun the integration of ITA Airways into its network, with several key benefits now available to passengers.
Effective immediately, members of Lufthansa's Miles & More program can earn and redeem miles on all ITA Airways flights, while ITA Airways’ Volare program members can use their points on flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines.
Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, expressed confidence in the success of the integration, stating, “Now that ITA Airways has become a member of our airline family a few days ago, we want to push ahead with the merger quickly, so that ITA and its passengers, as well as the guests of our other passenger airlines, can quickly benefit from the advantages of an expanded Lufthansa Group. We are also confident that ITA Airways will realize a profit as early as this year.”
“All in all, we are convinced that today, the start of the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group, marks the beginning of a joint success story for customers, employees and shareholders of ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group,” he added.
From 30 March 2025, a range of changes will be implemented for passengers, starting with the relocation of ITA Airways' operations at key German airports. In Frankfurt, ITA Airways will move to Terminal 1, and in Munich, it will move to Terminal 2. This change will help streamline connections between the Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways, improving transfer times for passengers.
Additionally, mutual lounge access will be available from 30 March 2025. ITA Airways passengers will have access to approximately 130 Lufthansa Group lounges and their partners, while Lufthansa Group passengers will also be able to use ITA Airways’ lounges.
In terms of flight scheduling and bookings, over 100 code-share routes will be introduced, allowing passengers to combine flights across different Lufthansa Group airlines. These connections will be available for booking from 25 February through various sales channels, including apps for both Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways. The new code-shares will give ITA Airways passengers access to more than 250 destinations within the Lufthansa Group’s network. In return, Lufthansa Group customers will gain access to ITA Airways' domestic flights to regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, and Puglia.
The coordination of flight schedules between Lufthansa Group’s hubs (Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels) and ITA Airways’ key airports (Rome and Milan) will also take effect from 30 March, providing more flexibility and reducing waiting times for connections to long-haul destinations.
As part of the integration, ITA Airways is preparing to join the Star Alliance, with the formal process expected to be completed by the first half of 2026. ITA Airways has already started withdrawing from the SkyTeam alliance.
Lufthansa Group’s cargo division is also set to expand its cooperation with ITA Airways, with joint freight offers planned for select routes starting this summer.
