Malaysia Adopts Thales’ Next-generation HF XLRadio Systems

Malaysia has signed a landmark contract with Thales and its local partner, Advanced Defence Systems (ADS), becoming the first international customer to adopt Thales’ new generation of resilient high-data-rate HF XL radio stations.

With the adoption, Malaysia also becomes the first country in Asia to field HF XL technology, marking a significant step in the modernization of its secure communications capabilities. The deal covers more than 100 complete vehicle-mounted stations, including radios, amplifiers, and antennas.

Unveiled at Eurosatory 2024, the HF XL TRC 3900 system delivers ten times the data rate of conventional HF solutions, providing robust long-range communications in challenging environments. For Malaysia, where tropical terrain often complicates connectivity, the system offers secure transmissions, low operating costs, and resilience against jamming — while supporting large data transfers such as images and live video.

The TRC 3900 family also includes 20W manpacks for mobile forces with ranges up to 1,000 km, and higher-powered 400W and 1kW solutions that allow deployed command posts to maintain links with headquarters and units over distances of up to 5,000 km.

Thales’ presence in Malaysia spans over 25 years, with more than 10,000 tactical radios already delivered to the Malaysian Army. The new HF XL radios are fully interoperable with existing systems, strengthening the company’s role as a trusted partner in the country’s defense communications. The collaboration with ADS further ensures long-term support and services tailored to the Malaysian Defence Forces.

“This first export success confirms the relevance of HF XL in meeting the needs of armed forces operating in constrained environments,” said Christophe Groshenry, Vice President, Radiocommunications Products, Thales. “By combining innovation with interoperability with existing fleets, Thales provides its customers with a robust, high-performance and future-ready solution.”
