DSA 2026: Malaysia Champions Non-Alignment Strategy
The 19th edition of Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (NATSEC) Asia 2026 officially commenced today at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), marking a significant milestone for the regional defence sector. This year’s exhibition, themed Empowering the Capability and Resilience of Technology Miners, has achieved a record-breaking scale, hosting more than 1,456 companies from 63 countries. Since its inception in 1988, DSA has transformed from a conventional manufacturer-buyer meeting point into a critical institution of engagement for global defence leaders and security agencies.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted Malaysia’s strategic posture amidst shifting geopolitical tides. He articulated that the nation's policy of active non-alignment serves as a distinct commercial and strategic advantage, allowing Malaysian suppliers to integrate into global supply chains without the political complications often found elsewhere. The Prime Minister urged global original equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers to deepen their collaboration with local Malaysian firms, citing their proven precision and accountability in high-value commercial sectors as directly applicable to the defence and aerospace industries.
The official proceedings and strategic directions for the event were detailed in reports by Bernama, The Star, and official statements from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Chairman of DSA Exhibition and Conference Sdn Bhd. These sources confirmed that the event is co-organised with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs, underscoring the high-level governmental support that provides the platform with its international authority.
Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, Chairman of DSA Exhibition and Conference Sdn Bhd, emphasized that the endurance of the platform for nearly four decades is rooted in its ability to remain useful and trusted. He noted that the integration of NATSEC Asia alongside DSA reflects an evolution in the modern security conversation, moving beyond traditional military systems to encompass public protection, national resilience, and the security of societies. This inclusive approach ensures that countries and companies participate on an equal footing, facilitating high-level engagement and meaningful business opportunities even during periods of global uncertainty.
The geopolitical balance within the exhibition is evident in the diverse international participation, with South Korea notably launching a significant promotion booth aimed at the Southeast Asian market. The Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea is showcasing advanced technologies including underwater drones and artificial intelligence-based command decision support systems. Meanwhile, European aerospace giant Airbus announced plans to expand its footprint in Malaysia through memoranda of understanding with local entities such as Boustead Holdings Bhd and Airod Sdn Bhd, supporting Malaysia’s National Defence Industry Policy.
To maintain this growth, the Malaysian government has pledged a reliable business environment, including the rigorous protection of intellectual property and the enforcement of strategic trade controls. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the law would apply equally to all participants, ensuring that Malaysian companies earn their positions in international supply chains based on performance rather than political connections. As the four-day event progresses, the conversations and agreements shaped at MITEC are expected to have a lasting impact on regional security dynamics and the development of the Asia-Pacific defence industrial base.
