Malaysia has completed its first-ever mass airborne drop using the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF/TUDM) Airbus A400M Atlas, marking a significant capability milestone for the nation’s rapid deployment forces. The historic mission took place at Drop Zone Nangka in Kelantan as part of Exercise Gerak Pantas Series 26/2025—Malaysia’s premier rapid mobilisation and airborne operation drill.
The mass drop—witnessed by the Chief of Army—featured one A400M and two C-130 Hercules transport aircraft from TUDM, delivering paratroopers and equipment from the Malaysian Army’s Pasukan Aturgerak Cepat (Rapid Deployment Force – PAC). The debut of the A400M in this demanding operational role demonstrates a notable expansion in the air force’s strategic airlift support to the army, particularly in complex joint airborne operations.
According to information released by the Malaysian Army on its official channels, this year’s Gerak Pantas exercise is integrated with the Air Mobility and Tactical Operations Exercise (AMTOP) Series 2/2025. The merged training event aims to enhance interoperability between the Army and Air Force, testing real-time mission execution and command integration during high-tempo air-land operations.
The Airbus A400M, currently operated by multiple Asia-Pacific nations including Malaysia and Indonesia (on order), is widely regarded as a next-generation tactical and strategic airlifter. Its ability to carry up to 116 fully equipped troops and execute multiple platform deliveries gives Malaysia a considerable uplift in power projection—particularly for rapid response missions within Southeast Asia’s archipelagos and remote territories.
The exercise also reflects Malaysia’s broader modernisation priorities, aligned with the Chief of Army’s Key Directives emphasising soldier readiness, joint operational innovation and increased lethality. Defence observers note that the expansion of airborne interoperability between TDM (Malaysian Army) and TUDM (Royal Malaysian Air Force) strengthens the Malaysian Armed Forces’ (MAF) standing in regional joint-force capability development.
Senior leadership from both services—including the Assistant Chief of Staff (Operations & Training), the Commander of 8 Brigade and the Acting Commander of RMAF’s Gong Kedak Air Base—were present to observe the successful execution of the mass parachute insertion, underscoring its strategic importance.
With airborne forces playing a crucial role in humanitarian response, border security and regional contingency operations, Malaysia’s first A400M mass drop is expected to pave the way for more advanced joint rapid deployment missions—supporting national defence objectives while contributing to collective security across the Asia-Pacific region.
