Malaysia Selects CAESAR SPH for Army Modernisation

Malaysia Finalises Selection For Long-Range Artillery

Mohd Hanif Ismail - : Apr 20, 2026 - : 8:42 pm

The Malaysian Ministry of Defence has reached a critical milestone in its decade-long pursuit of enhanced field artillery by selecting the CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzer to modernise its land forces. This strategic decision marks the conclusion of an exhaustive evaluation process that pitted several international platforms against one another to fulfil the Malaysian Army’s Requirement for a highly mobile, long-range fire support system. Industry sources indicate that while the formal Letter of Award for procurement of one regiment of CAESAR 155mm was not issued during the recent Defence Services Asia 2026 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, the government intends to formalise the procurement later this year.

This procurement programme is being spearheaded by the European land defence giant KNDS in close collaboration with its long-standing Malaysian industrial partner, Advanced Defence Systems Sdn Bhd. The partnership is expected to involve significant local assembly and integration work at industrial facilities in Segamat, Johor, aligning with Malaysia’s newly invigorated National Defence Industry Policy. By opting for a wheeled 6x6 configuration, the Malaysian Army aims to achieve a balance between the rapid deployability required for the nation's diverse geographical terrain and the devastating firepower necessary for modern high-intensity conflict.

Official Reporting

According to reporting from Bernama and official corporate briefings from KNDS at DSA 2026, the Malaysian government has already allocated RM50 million (US$10.6 million) in the 2026 national budget to initiate the first phase of this acquisition. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari confirmed in parliamentary sessions that the technical evaluation of six competing systems reached its conclusion following rigorous field trials. The selection of the CAESAR system follows a successful industrial track record in Malaysia, where KNDS and Advanced Defence Systems previously collaborated on the delivery of the 105LG light towed gun.

Regional Firepower Modernisation Trends

The introduction of the CAESAR system into the Malaysian inventory reflects a broader trend across the Asia-Pacific region where militaries are pivoting toward truck-mounted artillery to replace legacy towed systems. In a regional landscape defined by the need for rapid "shoot-and-scoot" capabilities to survive counter-battery fire, the CAESAR provides a proven solution that has seen extensive combat use in European theatres. Malaysia’s move ensures technological parity with regional neighbours like Thailand and Indonesia, both of whom already operate versions of the CAESAR platform within their respective artillery regiments.

Strategic Industrial Collaboration Framework

Beyond the immediate tactical advantages, the deal serves as a cornerstone for Malaysia’s goal of achieving 30 per cent local component usage in all major defence assets. Advanced Defence Systems Sdn Bhd will act as the primary integrator, ensuring that the Malaysian defence ecosystem benefits from technology transfers and high-value engineering jobs. This industrial collaboration program is designed to move Malaysia away from a purely buyer-seller relationship toward a sustainable domestic maintenance, repair, and overhaul capability for its most critical land systems.

Geopolitical Neutrality And Procurement

Malaysia’s choice of a European platform underscores its commitment to maintaining a non-aligned and neutral stance amidst the escalating competition between major global powers. By diversifying its defence procurement and fostering European partnerships alongside its existing assets from various global origins, Kuala Lumpur reinforces its strategic autonomy. The selection process highlights a pragmatic approach to national security, prioritising battle-proven technology and industrial offsets that strengthen the domestic economy while avoiding the complexities of direct alignment with any single superpower’s military-industrial complex.
