The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is accelerating the integration of advanced long-range radar systems in East Malaysia to counter emerging security threats in the South China Sea. The previous Chief of Air Force, General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan bin Goriman Khan, confirmed that a new Thales Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) long-range air defence radar will be operational in Bintulu, Sarawak, by mid-2026. This deployment serves as a cornerstone of the Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55), which aims to modernize Malaysia’s ageing surveillance infrastructure. The Bintulu site will complement the existing Lockheed Martin AN/TPS-77 radar in Labuan, creating a digital sensor mesh across the Borneo coastline.
Strategic surveillance remains a priority for Kuala Lumpur as regional maritime disputes intensify. The GM400α offers a detection range of 515km and features 3D AESA technology to track high-velocity targets and small unmanned systems simultaneously. The United States previously facilitated this radar expansion by providing the AN/TPS-77 system under its "Building Partner Capacity" programme, valued at approximately US$25.1 million. This integrated network allows the RMAF to monitor its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with significantly higher precision than the legacy Alenia systems it replaces.
According to reports from Bernama and defence watchers, this radar integration coincides with the arrival of other strategic assets. Chief of Air Force, General Norazlan Aris stated in his 2026 New Year address that the force expects to receive three Turkish-made Anka-S Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) by February 2026. These drones will operate alongside the ground-based radars to provide persistent overwatch of critical energy assets. The total modernisation budget for 2026 is projected at approximately RM21.2 billion (US$4.48 billion), underscoring the government's commitment to territorial integrity.
The integration of the Bintulu radar signifies a shift toward a networked air defence architecture. By linking ground sensors with upcoming aerial platforms, the RMAF reduces blind spots in the vast Sarawak and Sabah flight information regions. Industry experts note that the GM400α provides superior electronic counter-countermeasures, essential for operating in contested electromagnetic environments. This capability is vital for the RMAF as it prepares to induct its first batch of FA-50M light combat aircraft from South Korea later this year.
Malaysia's focus on East Malaysia reflects a broader Asia-Pacific trend of enhancing maritime domain awareness. The deployment of long-range sensors in Bintulu and Labuan provides a strategic buffer against airspace incursions. General Norazlan Aris emphasized that the arrival of these assets demands comprehensive preparation, including infrastructure upgrades and human resource competency development. This holistic approach ensures that the RMAF can sustain high readiness levels despite the increasing complexity of the regional security landscape.
The RMAF leadership has been vocal about the necessity of these upgrades to maintain national sovereignty. General Norazlan Aris noted that the year 2026 marks a critical phase in the transformation agenda for the air force. He stated that the assets are not merely additions to the platform but are primary determinants of long-term capability. Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin also reaffirmed that these procurements align with the integrated deterrence strategy of the Malaysian Armed Forces.
