Malaysia, Indonesia Set Eyes on Slovak’s EVA SPH

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Sep 14, 2022 - : 3:46 pm

Malaysia is negotiating to acquire between 16 to 18 EVA Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) units from Slovakia, according to a report from the Institute for Central Europe (ICE), a Slovakian think-tank organization earlier this month.

ICE also mentioned that the deal is expected to be finalized and announced shortly. When concluded, it will be the first export and order for the EVA SPH.

Aside from Malaysia, Indonesia was also mentioned as one of the prospective buyers of the Slovak-made SPH. Citing different operational requirements from the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) that has chosen French-made Caesar, both Slovak-made EVA and ZUZANA 2 are said to be two of the top contenders for the Indonesian Marine Corps’ SPH procurement program.

Both EVA and ZUZANA 2 are developed and manufactured by KONŠTRUKTA-Defence, a defense R&D company based in Dubnica nad Váhom, Slovakia. Each system consisted of an auto-loading 155 mm/L52 howitzer mounted on a modified Tatra 8×8 truck platform, with a Tatra 6×6 truck variant for the former.

Crewed by three personnel, the maximum firing range of both systems is about 41 km with rocket-assisted shells. A longer firing range is possible to achieve with special ammunition types. Both systems boast a rate of fire of 5 rounds in the first minute and up to 13 rounds in 3 minutes. EVA carries a total of twenty-four 155 mm rounds, while ZUZANA 2 has the space to carry up to 40 rounds internally.

With a weight ranging from 22 to 28 tonnes depending on the truck chassis, EVA has a maximum range of around 700 km (600 km for the 32-tonne ZUZANA 2). The maximum on-road speed is 90 km/h for EVA and 80 km/h for ZUZANA 2.

While EVA SPH has yet to be ordered domestically and still awaiting a successful deal with Malaysia, over 41 units of ZUZANA 2 have been deployed or ordered by the Slovak Army. ZUZANA 2 also have been exported to Cyprus and to Ukraine.
