The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has achieved a pivotal milestone in its long-standing fleet modernisation programme with the official naming and launching of its third Maharaja Lela-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The vessel, christened the Sharif Mashor (2503), was ceremonially launched on 10 February 2026 at the Lumut Naval Shipyard (LUNAS) in Perak. Named after a legendary Sarawakian warrior, the ship serves as a symbol of Malaysia’s renewed commitment to its "15-to-5" Transformation Plan, which seeks to streamline and modernise the nation's naval assets to better respond to evolving security challenges in the South China Sea and the wider Asia Pacific region.
According to recent reports from the national news agency Bernama, the Sharif Mashor represents a significant leap for the domestic maritime industry, being part of a project that has now reached approximately 75.75% overall completion. While the programme has faced historic delays, the launch of the third hull follows the maiden sea-going trial of the lead ship, KD Maharaja Lela (2501), which took place on 28 January 2026. This technical launch for the Sharif Mashor allows for the commencement of intensive system integration and outfitting. The vessel is built on an enlarged version of the French Naval Group’s Gowind-class design, featuring advanced stealth characteristics and a multi-mission capability including anti-surface, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare suites.
The Malaysian Ministry of Defence has recently provided updated delivery schedules to maintain transparency with stakeholders and international partners. During a parliamentary session in late January 2026, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed that the first vessel, KD Maharaja Lela, is now slated for commissioning in December 2026. The second ship, KD Raja Muda Nala (2502), which was launched in July 2025, is scheduled for August 2027. The newly launched Sharif Mashor (LCS 3) is expected to join the fleet in December 2027, followed by LCS 4 in August 2028 and LCS 5 in April 2029. The total contract value remains fixed at RM11.2 billion (US$2.67 billion), with approximately RM8.3 billion (US$1.98 billion) already expended under a rigorous progress-based payment structure.
The Maharaja Lela-class project is more than a mere procurement exercise; it is a cornerstone of Malaysia’s strategy to project power and maintain maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. As regional tensions necessitate more robust naval presences, these 3,100-tonne frigates provide the RMN with sophisticated platforms capable of operating the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and VL MICA air defence systems. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari emphasised the non-negotiable nature of the project’s quality, stating that the Ministry will not compromise on safety, operational, or technical specifications despite the revised delivery schedule. He noted that the project is now moving in phased, focused stages to ensure the vessels meet stringent international naval standards.
The ceremony at Lumut was attended by high-ranking officials including the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and the Chief of Navy, Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain. In a speech delivered on his behalf, Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin remarked that naming the ship after Sharif Mashor elevates the spirit of heroism and stands as a symbol of the RMN’s strength in defending national sovereignty. The successful transition of the project under the management of LUNAS, overseen by the Ministry of Finance, reflects a broader regional trend of ASEAN nations seeking to bolster their "blue water" capabilities through domestic shipyards and technology transfer from European partners like Naval Group and Thales.
