The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) officially decommissioned the veteran frigate KD Hang Tuah (F76) on 3 December 2025, marking the end of nearly five decades of active service and underscoring the navy's accelerated efforts to rationalise and modernise its ageing fleet structure. The retirement of the Cold War-era warship is a significant step in the RMN's ambitious '15-to-5 Transformation Programme', aimed at streamlining its combat assets to meet the escalating complexity of maritime security challenges across the Asia-Pacific.
KD Hang Tuah, which served for 48 years under the Malaysian flag, possesses a remarkable and complex lineage. Built in the 1960s, the Type 41/61 derived frigate was originally intended for the Ghana Navy, but was instead completed and commissioned by the Royal Navy (RN) in 1973 as HMS Mermaid. After a brief tenure with the RN's Far East patrol squadron, the vessel was transferred to the Royal Malaysian Navy in 1977, retaining the pennant number F76. While she spent her later decades primarily functioning as a vital training frigate, her role was instrumental in shaping generations of Malaysian naval officers and maintaining a naval presence, including participating in international exercises and anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden.
As reported by local news outlets including Bernama, and confirmed across multiple social media channels, the decommissioning ceremony was held at the RMN Lumut Naval Base, observed with full military honours. Following her retirement, the KD Hang Tuah is slated for conversion into a naval museum ship, ensuring that one of the longest-serving vessels in the RMN’s history is preserved as a monument to Malaysian maritime heritage.
The retirement of the KD Hang Tuah is more than a ceremonial event; it is a tactical necessity driven by Malaysia's strategic need to achieve a Minimum Credible Deterrence. The RMN's '15-to-5' transformation strategy seeks to reduce the number of vessel classes from 15 to just five, thereby lowering operations and maintenance costs while improving standardisation, logistics, and combat readiness. The move to retire older, bespoke assets like the Hang Tuah frees up crucial resources for replacement programmes.
This modernisation push is critical given the current geopolitical landscape in Southeast Asia. Malaysia faces increasing pressure in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea, necessitating modern platforms capable of sustained operations and sophisticated deterrence. The focus now shifts fully to the newer principal classes, notably the Maharaja Lela-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and the Keris-class Littoral Mission Ships (LMS). The LCS programme, although plagued by significant delays and cost overruns—contracted under a MYR 9 billion (approximately US$ 2.1 billion) deal—is the centrepiece of Malaysia’s future surface fleet, intended to provide advanced surface combat capabilities in the contested maritime domain.
The measured phasing out of veteran vessels like F76 signals the RMN’s commitment to forging a smaller, yet more potent and technologically advanced fleet. By replacing ageing single-purpose hulls with multi-role combatants, the RMN is strategically repositioning itself to navigate the complex security dynamics of the Asia-Pacific region, ensuring its capacity to patrol vital sea lines of communication and uphold national sovereignty into the 21st century.
