Materialise has established an Aerospace Competence Centre within the Aerospace Innovation Hub at TU Delft, marking the company's first presence in the hub. Delft is recognised as a key aerospace centre in Europe.
Brigitte de Vet-Veithen, CEO of Materialise, stated that the new centre reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the aerospace sector through its experience in additive manufacturing (AM) and software solutions. “By joining this selective aerospace network, we can strengthen our capabilities, expand partnerships, and enable other aerospace leaders in this hub to accelerate innovation and explore new possibilities with AM,” she said.
Materialise has produced over 500,000 3D-printed parts for aerospace applications, manufacturing approximately 4,000 different components annually. It holds several aerospace certifications, including Production Organization Approval (POA) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and EN 9100 certification for manufacturing flight-ready parts. The company serves the aerospace supply chain, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), airlines, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) providers, and suppliers.
Vice Mayor Maaike Zwart of Delft welcomed Materialise’s presence in the city, highlighting its potential contribution to the region’s aerospace ecosystem. "By joining the Aerospace Innovation Hub, Materialise strengthens our dynamic Aerospace Delta ecosystem and the Innovation District Delft, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in 3D printing and sustainable aviation," she said.
Materialise will collaborate with TU Delft on projects that allow students and researchers to gain practical experience with AM technologies while advancing research in sustainable aviation. The company joins other industry players, including Airbus and Collins Aerospace, at the hub.
Henri Werij, Dean of TU Delft’s Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, noted that the partnership aligns with the university’s mission of fostering innovation. “The arrival of Materialise at the Hub marks an exciting step toward deeper collaboration and new opportunities to drive additive manufacturing expertise to the growing aerospace community," he said.
Additive manufacturing has been used to address challenges in aerospace, offering benefits such as reduced lead times, lower costs for small production runs, and decreased stock and warehousing expenses. The technology also allows for rapid prototyping and design flexibility.
Beyond its established certified AM processes for aerospace, Materialise assists companies in developing and qualifying new applications and materials. It also maintains a data repository containing performance data from various aerospace builds, supporting informed decision-making in component development.
Headquartered in Belgium with offices worldwide, Materialise provides AM software and services across multiple industries, including healthcare, automotive, and aerospace.
