MBDA Seeks to Grow India Presence

: Feb 22, 2019 - : 3:37 am

Missile specialist MBDA, which continues with its successful run in the Indian market, is seeking to further increase its marketshare. The company is likely to see increased orders from the Indian military for air to air and air to ground weapons for their fixed wing and rotary wing fleets.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already received MICA (IR & RF) missiles for its upgraded Mirage 2000 T/TI aircraft and will soon also operate this missile on its Rafale fighter jets.

The Rafale will also be the first IAF aircraft to be armed with the ramjet powered and network-enabled Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile. The next generation missile will provide the IAF with an unrivalled air dominance capability. The combination of a Rafale guided by an AWACS or AEW&C aircraft, for a missile engagement with Meteor will allow the weapon to use its throttleable ramjet engine, active radar seeker and datalink to provide unmatched end-game speed and maneuverability at greatly extended ranges.

MBDA claims that Meteor’s ‘No-Escape Zone’ is more than three times greater than any other existing or planned BVR weapons.

The ASRAAM has already been selected by the IAF as its within visual range (or dogfighting) missile for the Jaguar and Tejas light fighter. The ASRAAM has a large rocket motor and clean aerodynamic design, ASRAAM has unrivalled speed and resultant aerodynamic maneuverability and range.

The Mistral ATAM system has been successfully integrated on the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and final integration is being done on the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH). The ATAM system is to be fitted on more than 250 armed and indigenously built Indian helicopters.

More than 40,000 missiles belonging to the MILAN family have been produced in India, and Indian industry is now supplying key components for both MICA and ASRAAM missiles.
