Canadian space and defence firm MDA Space has been selected by the US Missile Defense Agency for participation in its SHIELD programme, positioning the company to compete for future task orders supporting homeland defence across multiple domains.
MDA Space confirmed it has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract under the Missile Defense Agency’s Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) initiative, a wide-ranging effort aimed at strengthening US defences against evolving threats.
The IDIQ award does not guarantee specific funding or work packages, but allows MDA Space to bid for future tasks as the programme advances. SHIELD is structured to draw on industry capabilities across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains, reflecting the increasingly integrated nature of missile defence and strategic warning architectures.
The Missile Defense Agency has not disclosed the total potential value of the SHIELD IDIQ framework, which is expected to run over multiple years and support a broad portfolio of technology development, systems integration and operational support activities.
Positioning within a Multi-domain Defence Effort
SHIELD forms part of a broader US push to modernise homeland defence in response to increasingly complex missile threats, including hypersonic weapons, advanced cruise missiles and integrated attack concepts. The programme is designed to be modular and scalable, allowing the agency to adapt requirements as threat profiles and technologies evolve.
By securing a place on the SHIELD IDIQ, MDA Space becomes eligible to compete for work that may span space-based sensing, command-and-control integration, data fusion and resilience across contested environments. Such programmes increasingly rely on space systems to provide persistent surveillance, early warning and decision support.
MDA Space has built a significant footprint in satellite systems, Earth observation and space-based intelligence, areas that align closely with the Missile Defense Agency’s growing emphasis on space as a critical layer in homeland defence.
Expanding Defence Footprint in the US Market
The award strengthens MDA Space’s position within the US defence ecosystem at a time when Washington is placing greater emphasis on allied industrial participation and resilient supply chains. While the company is headquartered in Canada, it has long operated in the US market and maintains partnerships across defence, intelligence and civil space sectors.
The company said the SHIELD award recognises its technical capabilities and experience supporting national security missions, though future work will depend on competitive task order awards and programme priorities set by the Missile Defense Agency.
Industry analysts note that IDIQ contracts such as SHIELD are increasingly used by US defence agencies to maintain flexibility while accelerating access to emerging technologies. For suppliers, inclusion on such frameworks is often seen as a strategic foothold rather than an immediate revenue driver.
Part of a Wider Defence and Space Strategy
MDA Space has sought to expand its defence-related activities alongside its civil and commercial space business, leveraging heritage in satellite payloads, robotics and geospatial intelligence. The company has supported more than 450 space missions over its five-decade history and continues to invest in next-generation space infrastructure.
Participation in SHIELD aligns with broader trends in missile defence, where space-based capabilities are becoming central to detection, tracking and engagement support, particularly as threats become faster, lower-flying and more difficult to intercept.
The Missile Defense Agency is expected to issue task orders under the SHIELD framework as specific capability gaps are defined and funded, with industry teams competing for individual elements of the programme.
