Metro Aviation has signed an agreement with Airbus Helicopters for up to 36 H140 helicopters to be used in emergency medical services (EMS). The Shreveport, Louisiana-based air medical operator has placed an initial order for 12 aircraft, with options for an additional 24. Metro Aviation is among the launch customers for the H140, which was unveiled at the VERTICON vertical lift industry event in Dallas, Texas.
Todd Stanberry, Vice President of Metro Aviation, highlighted the company’s long-standing partnership with Airbus and its involvement in the aircraft's development. “We are excited about the H140 and all the improvements it brings to the helicopter industry. We have partnered with Airbus for over 40 years, and it is good to have the opportunity to provide input into the design of this aircraft that is designed for the air medical mission. We are already in the process of designing a state-of-the-art air-medical interior that will set the standard for providing safe and high-quality air-medical transportation for the next several years,” he said.
Bart Reijnen, President of Airbus Helicopters in the U.S. and Head of the North America region, welcomed Metro Aviation’s participation in the programme. “Our longstanding partners at Metro Aviation have built a reputation for delivering world-class services for customers, and we are proud they will be partnering with us once again in the launch of the H140 helicopter. We are certain these new Airbus helicopters will enhance their operational capabilities, allowing them to better serve communities across the country,” he said.
The H140 is a light twin-engine rotorcraft in the 3-tonne class, intended for EMS, passenger transport, and private and business aviation. It features a redesigned T-shaped tail boom with an optimised Fenestron for reduced noise, a five-blade bearingless main rotor, and more powerful Safran engines. The helicopter also offers a larger cabin, large windows, and an optimised layout accommodating up to six passengers. Designed for accessibility, it includes large clamshell doors and a high tail boom for rear loading, enabling the use of various stretcher systems, including intensive care units and transport incubators. The aircraft is expected to enter service in 2028 for the EMS segment.
Metro Aviation provides air medical transport services and customises helicopters for various operational needs.
