Mexico, Indonesia to Ink Defence Cooperation Pact

: Apr 26, 2019 - : 6:31 am

Indonesia and Mexico will work toward having a formal defence cooperation agreement, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bondan Tiara Sofyan, Director General of Defence Potential, Indonesia, told Daily News.

“The proposed defence cooperation agreement will be an umbrella that would help in the development of ties between the two countries, Prof. Sofyan, who is heading the Indonesian delegation at the ongoing FAMEX, said.

“We will have Indo Defence 2020 in November next year. I hope we can have an official signing of the agreement at the event. We will certainly push for that.” Prof. Sofyan added that her office would ask the Government to appoint a special military attache in Mexico.

“Mexico has one in Indonesia. The military attache that now serves Mexico is based in the United States,” she said

The Indonesian delegation is at the event at the invitation of the Mexican Government and the event organizers. “We are here mainly to introduce the Indonesian defence Industry to the Latin American market. Many of those we spoke to were surprised that we have such a robust industry. We have also invited Mexican companies to attend Indo Defence next year. FEMIA and a few companies have confirmed their participation.”

There are a lot of opportunities for Indonesia and Mexico to cooperate in the field of defence, Cheppy T Wartono, Indonesian Ambassador to Mexico, said. “Indonesia is very good when it comes to military training; we have a great curriculum. Mexico doesn’t quite have that. That is one potential area of collaboration.

“Mexico is a non-traditional market for us,” the Ambassador added. “It is a market with great potential. Mexico would be a good gateway for Indonesian companies to sell their products in Latin America.”
