The global aviation industry faced a significant disruption this week as escalating military tensions in the Middle East forced the closure of critical air corridors. On 1 March 2026, Malaysia Airlines extended its suspension of all flights to and from Doha, Jeddah and Madinah until at least 4 March 2026. This decision followed an initial wave of cancellations that began on 28 February 2026. The move reflects a broader industry-wide prioritisation of safety as regional security developments reached a volatile peak following reported military strikes involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The closure of airspace across Qatar, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates has effectively paralysed some of the world’s busiest transit hubs. International carriers are now forced to navigate a complex and shrinking map of viable flight paths. While Malaysia Airlines has suspended specific Middle Eastern routes, it continues to operate long-haul services to London and Paris using alternative routings over Afghanistan. These adjustments ensure that aircraft remain well clear of active conflict zones, though they often result in increased fuel consumption and longer flight durations for operators.
According to official media statements from Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), Qatar Airways and Bernama, the suspension is a direct response to the "continued closure of airspace in parts of the Middle East." Qatar Airways confirmed on 1 March 2026 that its operations at Hamad International Airport (DOH) remain temporarily suspended pending a safety reassessment by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. Similarly, Etihad Airways paused all departures from Abu Dhabi earlier this week, citing the need to pull civilian aircraft out of harm’s way amidst retaliatory missile launches in the region.
The disruption carries heavy implications for the Asia-Pacific region, which relies heavily on Middle Eastern hubs for Europe-bound traffic. Industry analysts suggest that the backlog of passengers and airfreight will take weeks to clear once stability returns. The suspension has particularly affected religious travel, with reports of Malaysian pilgrims stranded in Jeddah following the sudden cancellation of flights. As carriers like Singapore Airlines and Batik Air also adjust their schedules, the regional aerospace sector is bracing for a period of prolonged operational volatility and increased costs.
Aviation authorities emphasize that these measures are precautionary and designed to ensure the total safety of passengers and crew. A spokesperson for Singapore Airlines noted that they are monitoring the situation closely and will adjust flight paths as needed based on a "security assessment of the geopolitical situation." In a statement, Malaysia Aviation Group reiterated that flights to the affected destinations will remain suspended pending further assessment. The current situation highlights the fragility of global air connectivity when faced with rapid escalations in regional military activity.
