Modern naval engagements demand immediate and precise responses to complex, fast-evolving threats, in an environment where milliseconds and meters can determine the outcome of a mission. Developed by ASELSAN to counter these treats, GÖKDENİZ Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) delivers a critical capability for naval self-defense.
Having recently entered service on BRP Diego Silang of Philippine Navy as a significant milestone for regional naval modernization efforts, GÖKDENİZ is quickly establishing itself as a key component of the Asia-Pacific's evolving maritime defense architecture. With its modular design, proven performance, and adaptability across a variety of naval platforms, GÖKDENİZ is emerging as a transformative force in short-range naval protection.
At the heart of GÖKDENİZ is a 35 mm twin-barrel gun system capable of firing 1,100 rounds per minute, delivering overwhelming firepower within seconds of engagement. The system is equipped with ASELSAN’s proprietary Automatic Linkless Ammunition Feed Mechanism (ALAFM), allowing operators to simultaneously load and instantly switch between High-Explosive Incendiary (HEI) and ATOM Airburst Ammunition. This flexibility enables GÖKDENİZ to tailor its kinetic response depending on the threat type, whether facing a maneuvering missile, a small drone swarm, or a fast-attack surface vessel.
What truly distinguishes from its counterparts GÖKDENİZ is its fully autonomous operation capability. Through a highly integrated tracking suite that includes electro-optical sensors, a tracking radar, and a dedicated 3D search radar in the system’s 100/35StA variant, GÖKDENİZ offers seamless sensor-to-shooter functionality. It detects, tracks, and neutralizes targets with no operator input required, minimizing reaction time and maximizing defensive efficiency even under saturation attack scenarios.
Beyond its primary role of defending against anti-ship missiles, GÖKDENİZ is also engineered for multi-domain effectiveness. Its fire control and engagement envelope extend to include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fast jets, rotary-wing aircraft, and asymmetric surface threats—making it a versatile and essential system for navies operating in regions like the Asia-Pacific.
These capabilities are proven through recent qualification tests, as GÖKDENİZ successfully detected and intercepted a sea-skimming target drone traveling at high speed fully autonomously. The system executed a long-range intercept, eliminating a simulated missile well before it could breach the vessel’s defensive perimeter, validating its combat proven presence for frontline deployment.
Designed, developed, and fielded with real-world requirements in mind, ASELSAN’s GÖKDENİZ represents a trusted, tested, and strategically scalable solution for modern navies seeking to secure the final line of defense. ASELSAN is proud to support the navies with this advanced system and looks forward to contributing to the region’s naval security in the years ahead.
