More European countries are expected to acquire the Elbit PULS system in the years to come.
Important industrial partnerships, operational needs, recent procurement momentum, and a favorable regulatory environment are expected to act as catalysts for the sale of the system in Europe. Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark have already chosen the PULS system. Rising demand is demonstrated by Elbit Systems' recent US$130 million contract with another, unidentified European client.
The transformation of PULS into the EuroPULS system through a partnership between Elbit Systems and KNDS is a significant factor in enhancing the appeal of the sytem in the region. This collaboration enables local production, technology transfer, and integration with European fire control systems.
EuroPULS is designed to be modular and platform-agnostic, capable of firing a wide range of munitions—including both Elbit and European legacy rockets—and adaptable to future missile types. This flexibility addresses the diverse operational requirements and procurement preferences of European armies.
The war in Ukraine has triggered a reassessment of European defence priorities, with a renewed emphasis on artillery and long-range precision fires. European NATO members are actively seeking to bolster their firepower and reduce dependency on single-source suppliers, making systems like PULS/EuroPULS, which offer interoperability and supply chain security, particularly attractive.
Elbit's "global/local" strategy, which emphasizes a direct presence in European countries and collaboration with local industry, further enhances its competitiveness and appeal for future contracts.
The version of the Elbit PULS rocket launcher in the service of the armed corps of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) was used for the first time during the war to hit targets in Gaza. The rocket used was an upgraded Elbit Accular 122 mm. The artillery corps of the IDF received the first PULS systems in 2020. The IDF system is dubbed "Lahav." Israeli sources said that an Elbit system upgraded Accular 122 mm rocket launched by the IDF systems achieved very accurate hits. The IDF's version is carried by a an eight wheeled Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT).
The PULS is made by the land systems department of Elbit systems. The system is capable of launching different types of rockets, to ranges of up to 300 km. According to the official brochure, the multi-purpose launcher features two PODS; each POD is designed for a specific rocket type: the Accular 122mm (18 rockets) with a range of up to 35km, the Accular 160mm (10 rockets) with a range of up to 40km, the EXTRA (4 rockets) with a range of up to 150km and the Predator Hawk (2 rockets) with a range of up to 300km.
The successful use of the "Lahav" system in the ongoing war is expected to accelerate the formation of a dedicated surfed-surface rockets unit in the IDF. The plan has been on the table for some years and now looks likely to be implemented.
