Naval Group, which has had a presence in Saudi Arabia for three decades, is highlighting the Belharra combat ship and Gowind, a corvette-size multi-mission Surface Combatant, at the ongoing World Defence Show in Riyadh.
Belharra has been designed keeping in view the needs of navies looking for a compact frigate that is able to perform the largest range of missions stand-alone or within a task force either for high sea long-lasting missions as for shallow water operation, in congested and contested operational environment. The first of five Belharra frigates that are being built as part of the French Navy FDI program will be completed in 2024. The Belharra also has its first international customer in the Hellenic Navy.
Belharra, which is the first digital frigate, features high level capabilities in anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine and asymmetric warfare domains. Having a modular design, Belharra can be adapted to meet specific needs of navies.
Gowind is designed to perform the full spectrum of naval defence operations and maritime security roles. Sturdy, strongly equipped, and highly manoeuvrable, the vessel integrates, through Naval Group’s SETIS® Combat Management System and innovative structural solutions, the latest generation sensors and weapons. Designed to be used against air, naval or underwater threats from the initial steps of the engineering process, Gowind is multipurpose by design.
Twelve units of Gowind have already been sold, with most of them built locally through Transfer of Technology and partnerships with local industry.
Naval Group is keen on developing further cooperation with local partners, to procure assistance and to transfer know-how through its subsidiary Naval Group Arabia. in 2015, the company signed an agreement with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) to enhance research and development partnerships dedicated to the naval and maritime sectors.
