NEC Corporation has received an order from Japan’s Immigration Services Agency (ISA) to supply walkthrough gates incorporating facial recognition technology to streamline airport arrival procedures. These gates are scheduled to be operational after 1 April at Haneda Airport Terminal 3, Kansai International Airport Terminal 1, and Narita International Airport Terminal 3.
In addition, NEC will install Immigration & Customs Declaration Kiosks for joint use by ISA and Japan Customs, update electronic customs procedure gates, and provide signage to assist passengers with arrival and departure procedures. The aim is to facilitate entry processes, improve convenience for travellers, and enhance operational efficiency for airport staff.
The number of overseas visitors to Japan has been increasing, leading to a rise in travellers opting for electronic immigration and customs procedures. With Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai taking place this year and the government’s target of welcoming 60 million international visitors by 2030, ensuring efficient airport procedures has become a priority. The use of advanced technology in immigration and customs clearance is gaining attention as a means to address this demand.
Japanese nationals returning to the country will be able to use the Immigration & Customs Declaration Kiosks to scan their passport, have their photograph taken, and provide required information in advance. This will allow them to pass through a walkthrough gate for identity verification, expediting the arrival process. The gates use NEC’s Bio-IDiom Edge Software, equipped with facial recognition technology, to verify travellers’ identities quickly and accurately. The design and guidance messaging of the gates are aligned with the Immigration & Customs Declaration Kiosks and the updated electronic customs gates to ensure a consistent user experience.
NEC states that it will continue to use its expertise and technology to support improvements in airport arrival and departure procedures.
